There are many
organizations across the world that serve blind people
and guide dog users. The purpose of many of these is to
provide education for the public and to help stop
discrimination against the disabled. Many of these offer
ways to help promote access and employment so the blind
population can return to work and lead productive lives.
GDUI - Guide Dog Users Inc. (GDUI) is
the largest organization of people interested in the dog
as a working guide. Our membership is international, with
the bulk of members in the continental United States, but
with members, in Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, Brazil,
Australia and Japan.
American Council of the Blind - The American Council of the Blind
is the nation's leading membership organization of blind
and visually impaired people. It was founded in 1961 and
incorporated in the District of Columbia.
North Carolina Puppy Raising Program - The North Carolina Puppy Raising
Program (NCPRP) is comprised of a dedicated group of
volunteers who raise GEB puppies during the first year of
their lives. These volunteers take the pups into their
homes and give them the love, support, and direction they
need to prepare them for their formal training as future
guides for blind men and women. Puppy raisers are
supported by additional volunteers who supply food and
veterinary services.
National Federation for the Blind - Founded in 1940, the National
Federation of the Blind (NFB) is the nation's largest and
most influential membership organization of blind
persons. With fifty thousand members, the NFB has
affiliates in all fifty states plus Washington D.C. and
Puerto Rico, and over seven hundred local chapters. As a
consumer and advocacy organization, the NFB is considered
the leading force in the blindness field today.
National Library Service for the
Blind and Physically Handicapped - National Library Service
administers a free library program of braille and
recorded materials circulated to eligible borrowers
through a network of cooperating libraries.
Association for the Blind and
Visually Impaired -
Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired, formerly
Vision Enrichment Services was founded in 1913 as the
Association for the Blind and for Sight Conservation. The
agency was incorporated in 1921. The purposes of the
agency is to assist, educate and promote the prevention
of blindness.
The Foundation Fighting Blindness - The Foundation Fighting Blindness
is a national eye research organization that funds
laboratory and clinical research at over 40 prominent
institutions in the United States and foreign countries.
It serves as a source of information for eye care
specialists, professionals and affected families.
The Hadley School for the Blind - The Hadley School for the Blind
offers over 90 distance education courses to eligible
students completely free of charge.
Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic - Providing services for nearly
half a century, Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic
(RFB&D) is a national nonprofit organization that
serves people who
cannot read standard print because of a visual,
perceptual or other physical disability.
